What Does a Condensate Pump do?
Condensate removal units are designed to pump accumulated water out of an HVAC unit, refrigeration system, boiler furnace, or steam system. Typically electrically powered, they run on centrifugal pumps and are small enough to be used in a household setting.
These pumps work by running intermittently and moving accumulated condensate into a tank. When the condensate begins to fill the tank, the unit engages an automatic pump which disperses the liquid.
Choosing the Right Pump
If you’re in the market for a condensate removal unit, there are a few factors to consider:
- Features. Depending on the size of the pump, some units have two pumps designed to empty the tank or a two-stage switch to control operation. You’ll also find a variety of different tank sizes to choose from. You may also want to add a neutralizer, which can help prevent drain corrosion and make your home a healthier place.
- Price. Condensate units come at a large variety of price points. Depending on the features you’re looking for, you can expect to spend anywhere from about $50 to several hundred dollars on a unit.
- Installation. If you’re planning to install it yourself, look for a pump that’s easy to install and maintain.
